  14. Meet Student Designer: Sally Wong
    Name: Sally Wong
    Age: 20
    School: Steinhardt for MCC
    Year: Sophomore

    1. Where is your favorite space for artistic inspiration?
My favorite space for artistic inspiration is in my living room at home. I have a beach lounge chair that I just lie around in. However, it’s my favorite space because that’s where my baby bunnies, Mochi and Momo, freely roam around.

    2. If you could choose one designer to outfit your entire wardrobe, who would it be?
For this season I would KILL for Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chirui to design my wardrobe because I absolutely adore Valentino’s Spring 2011 Couture Collection. It’s so beautiful that I would cry every day just knowing I could wear their dresses.

    3. What is your design process like?
I always like to plan everything in my head. I’m not that good at drawing and sometimes it’s hard to express the colors you really want in sketches. I can spend 3-5 hours swatching at a fabric store. When it’s time for creating the design, there are always dozens of adjustments made before it is “perfect.”

    4. First thing you ever created/designed on your own?
My guilty pleasure, when I was seven years old, was dressing up my stuffed animals with accessories and pieces of fabric. I also wanted them to have makeup but didn’t want to get them dirty. So, I used to draw lipstick on paper, cut out lip shapes, and tape it to them. Afterwards, I would do a photo shoot… I still have that portfolio.

    5. What inspired you to start designing?
I was nine years old when Jennifer Lopez famously wore Versace’s green silk chiffon “Jungle Dress” at the 2000 Grammy Awards. Enough said.

  15. Meet Student Designer: David Hsieh
    Name: David Hsieh
    Age: 20
School: Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development
    Year: Senior

1.Where is your favorite space for artistic inspiration?
I love brainstorming in the shower. It is the perfect place—quiet and relaxing—to be alone with your thoughts.

2.If you could choose one designer to outfit your entire wardrobe, who would it be?
Choosing one would be so hard! If I could combine the cool sleek designs of Hedi Slimane and the quirky and colorful fun of Jeremy Scott, that would be my ideal designer.

3.What is your design process like?
I always think about who is going to wear what I am designing. I design around this “girl” in my head. It’s really hard for me to translate design sketches into the actual construction of clothes. I tend to make a lot of mistakes, despite being a little perfectionist. However, I found that taking the little mistakes you make on the way and working with them makes designing a lot more enjoyable (and even better sometimes!).

    4. First thing you ever created/designed on your own.
Coming from California, t-shirts are always a staple in my closet. So, I guess it was natural for me to start designing with t-shirts. I had a huge Spice Girls revival phase my senior year of high school and made “Spice Girls” t-shirts with bleach. I used to also make hats out of scraps of fabric at home.

    5. What inspired you to start designing?
Growing up I watched a lot of cartoons and started drawing my own characters. So designing clothes really came from creating characters and deciding what they would wear.
